Best 20-Inch Kids Bikes, Ranked by Weight

The 20-inch wheel size fits most kids ages 6-10 (48"-56" tall) and is often their first bike with gears and hand brakes. It's also the size where the gap between premium and department-store bikes is most dramatic. A lightweight bike is easier for a child to pedal, steer, and stop — and it makes the difference between a kid who loves riding and one who leaves the bike in the garage.

We ranked every major brand's 20-inch offering by weight, because weight is the single best proxy for overall quality in kids bikes. Lighter bikes use better components, better bearings, and better geometry.

Understanding the Tiers

Premium (17 – 20 lbs) — Best Overall

Woom, Prevelo, Frog, Cleary, and Guardian build bikes specifically engineered for children. Every component is kid-scaled: shorter brake levers, narrower grips, lighter wheels. These bikes hold 60-80% resale value, which means the true cost of ownership is remarkably low. A $450 Woom ridden for 18 months and sold for $300 costs less per month than a $120 Huffy you can't give away.

Smart buy: Look for used premium bikes. A used Woom 4 at $280 is one of the best values in kids cycling — your child gets a 17-lb bike, and you'll sell it for $250 when they outgrow it.

Mid-Range (21 – 23 lbs) — Great Value

Trek, Co-op, Specialized, and Giant offer solid bikes from established brands with real bike-shop support. They're 3-5 lbs heavier than premium but still meaningfully lighter than department store bikes. These hold 25-50% resale and are widely available used.

Department Store (23 – 28 lbs) — Avoid If Possible

Schwinn, Diamondback, Mongoose, Huffy, and Kent are heavy, use adult-scaled components, and often arrive poorly assembled. A 27-lb Huffy is over 40% of a typical 6-year-old's body weight. The equivalent for an adult would be pedaling a 65-lb bike. These hold only 10-25% resale.

Weight math: The Woom 4 at 17.2 lbs is 10.8 lbs lighter than a Kent at 28.0 lbs. For a 55-lb child, that's the difference between carrying 31% vs 51% of their body weight.
